Spring visit, March to May

Ants and spiders, before the colonies grow

Ants and spiders wake with the first warm week. A spring visit gets to them while there are still few.

Ants follow moisture and crumbs, and a trail across the counter usually starts at a crack in the foundation or a gap around a pipe. Spiders come for the insects. We start outside, because that is where both begin.

Signs to look for

  • Ant trails along baseboards, windowsills or the counter

  • Small mounds of fine soil by the patio or foundation

  • Webs gathering at eaves, window corners and the garage

  • Winged insects indoors in spring: save one and show us, because some are termites

At the visit

What we do, in four steps

  1. 01

    Step 1: Look

We walk the outside: the foundation, window frames, door thresholds and the soil line.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Name it

Ants and spiders are not one problem. We tell you which kind you have and where it comes in.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Treat

We treat the entry points and trails, and clear webs at the eaves and doors.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Seal and note

Small gaps get sealed. Moisture and plants against the wall go on your report.

Before and after

What helps from your side

  • Trim back

Cut plants and mulch away from the walls so ants have no bridge.

  • Clear the counter

Wipe crumbs, rinse the pet dish and keep sweet spills from sitting.

  • Expect some ants

You may still see a few for a couple of weeks. Call if it keeps going.

Questions about this visit

Are carpenter ants different?

Yes. They nest in wet or damaged wood, so the fix is finding the wood. We'll look when we see large black ants or sawdust-like piles, and tell you what we find.

Will the spiders go away?

Most houses have a few. We cut back the insects they eat and clear webs at the doors, but we can't promise there will be none.

Is it ants or termites?

Winged ants and winged termites look alike. Save one in a piece of tape and show your technician, or text us a photo.
